About Casa Luminaria

Casa Luminaria, a century-old volcanic stone dwelling nestled in La Caldera de Taburiente National Park on La Palma, Canary Islands, was lovingly constructed by our great grandfather in the 1920s. This remarkable house graces the dark Caldera with its luminous presence, offering a stunning contrast to the night sky. Renowned locally as ‘La Luminaria,’ it resides within a stargazer’s paradise thanks to the island’s pristine air and minimal light pollution. Our commitment to preserving this celestial spectacle is evident in our motion-sensor-activated, solar-powered lighting system, which gracefully fades to let the stars shine uninterrupted.

Built from a strong foundation & Life-long dreams

When Casa Luminaria came into our father’s possession, it stood in a state of decay, deemed uninhabitable, with the surrounding flora long gone. Yet, our father possessed a vision that eluded others. Over the course of a decade, he meticulously fortified the house’s robust foundation, breathed life back into the once-barren vegetation, all while preserving the rustic allure of the original structure. Today, it stands as one of the most enchanting places to stay within the national park, a testament to his unwavering dedication. His love for Casa Luminaria has passed down through the generations, as his children share his deep affection for this land. Together, we work tirelessly to maintain the farm, nurture the lush foliage, and enhance the beauty of the house and its surrounding area, ensuring that Casa Luminaria continues to thrive as a cherished family legacy and a haven of natural splendor.

Rustic Roots with modern touches

Casa Luminaria has witnessed the integration of contemporary enhancements in recent years. These include paved pathways meandering gracefully across the property, a spacious cement driveway accommodating up to three cars simultaneously, motion-activated lights that cast a soft glow along the walkways during the night, and the introduction of modern appliances within. Additionally, a sturdy metal framework enveloping the house has been added, offering an ideal support system for the flourishing grapevines and passion fruit plants that adorn the property. A new natural pool is currently under construction, utilizing one of the previously unused water tanks on the premises, adding to the allure of this evolving gem. Casa Luminaria will continue to grow in conjunction with the world around it. We are firm believers in supplementing and nurturing our beautiful real world, not replacing it.

Prioritizing sustainability & protecting the environment

Casa Luminaria epitomizes the essence of self-sufficiency, environmental consciousness, and sustainability. Within its confines, a harmonious relationship with nature and technology has been forged. The property boasts an extensive array of solar panels that harness the bountiful energy of the sun. This energy not only powers the house’s lighting but also fuels essential modern conveniences such as refrigerators, televisions, washing machines, WIFI routers, and more. A robust and meticulously maintained main water tank serves as the sole lifeline for all water-related needs. From providing water for showers to cooking, and nurturing the flourishing vegetation on the farm, this self-sufficient ecosystem ensures that Casa Luminaria operates in perfect harmony with its natural surroundings while catering to modern comforts.

“I have been lucky enough to visit La Casa Luminaria de la Caldera on two occasions. This peaceful oasis in nature is a perfect location for travelers with varied interests. La Palma offers options for world-class hiking, star-gazing, ocean activities, food, and cultural immersion. As an Aerospace Engineer at NASA, I was left speechless when I saw the beauty of the night sky, speckled with millions of stars visible to the naked eye.

Roque de los Muchachos Observatory is accessible from La Casa Luminaria and is a must-see for telescopes and gorgeous views of the islands from above the clouds. I have been the most relaxed while connecting to nature in La Palma.

Casa Luminaria de La Caldera offers the perfect opportunity to be in the national park with amenities unlike any other living space in the area. The Gomes family are gracious and helpful hosts who ensure your visit is tailored to your interests. La Palma also offers ferry connections to other stunning locations such as Tenerife. La Caldera de Taburiente and La Palma are without question the most beautiful places I’ve been in my life, and I cannot imagine a better way to experience them than staying at La Casa Luminaria de la Caldera. The island is full of great day trips, from breathtaking hikes in La Caldera to immaculate beaches peppered across La Palma. You will never lack for exciting excursions everyone can enjoy.

Nearby, Los Llanos has tons of delicious restaurants and varied boutiques for all of your eating and shopping needs. Despite the fact the island is not yet a tourist trap, German, French and English speakers can enjoy their time on the island even without being fluent in Spanish thanks to the remarkably friendly island residents.

Only a short fifteen minute drive from town and an hour from the airport, La Casa Luminaria offers incredible scenery and a view of the stars you won’t want to miss. Combine that with all of the modern amenities you could want and exceptional hospitality, there are few places that could be better to spend your time than La Casa Luminaria de la Caldera. I know I can’t wait to return and further explore this paradise.

What a house and what an island!

Hands down the best vacation I have ever had, and the accommodations provided by La Luminaria de la Caldera were top-tier. I couldn’t think of a better way to experience an island as beautiful as La Palma than from a mountainside retreat like La Luminaria de la Caldera. The views from the property were incredible, the amenities were top-notch, and the internet was fast enough to get some work done and even do a little online gaming! We spent many nights star-gazing followed by a few rounds of Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros, really demonstrating the property’s duality. It is truly the perfect combination of rustic charm and modern amenities.

This property even has close proximity to Los Llanos which is a town full of great restaurants, friendly people, and vibrant nightlife. You truly have the best of both worlds being housed in a peaceful secluded area with only a 15-minute, yet very scenic, commute into a bustling town.

La Luminaria de la Caldera is absolutely breath-taking. Waking up every morning to the beautiful mountains and vibrant blue sky outside was incredible, and ending the day with the brightest stars I’ve ever seen was more than I could have ever asked for.

The house is in the perfect location if you like hiking. It’s actually situated right next to one of the main trails of La Caldera. You can brave the long hike up to Los Brecitos (starting point of the downhill portion of the hike- popular for hikers of all levels of experience and home to some of the best views of La Caldera) or hike down for about half a mile to catch a taxi that will take you there. From there, you can do an amazing hike through the Caldera and back to the house (around 3-4 hours).

The house is also close enough to town for easy access to delicious food and vibrant nightlife. The restaurants have great ambiance and the servers (and even the chefs!) are all so friendly/welcoming. The steak from Los Argentinos is some of the best steak I’ve had in my life (so good and affordable that we went back 4 times), and Franchi Pani provides an exquisite fine dining experience. My trip to La Palma was by far the best vacation I’ve ever been on, and I am looking forward to going back and doing all the other hikes and activities we didn’t have time for!
